Abdullah’s Team Calls Election Results ‘Fraudulent’

Hours after the announcement of the preliminary results of the country’s fourth presidential elections in which President Ashraf Ghani came in first, Abdullah Abdullah’s campaign team said the results are the outcome of “widespread fraud” in the process.

Abdullah’s team accused Ghani’s campaign team of taking the Independent Election Commission’s side and said the preliminary results were announced without separating the “clean” and “fraudulent” votes from each other.

President Ashraf Ghani earned 923,868 votes and 50.64%, to lead the preliminary results of the 2019 presidential election, according to the Independent Election Commission’s announcement on Sunday morning.

Abdullah Abdullah followed with 720,990 votes and 39.52%, the IEC announced.

“Our people accomplished their role in the September presidential elections and were waiting for the results of their ‘clean’ votes,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, those who do not believe in the people’s right to election and for democracy have affected the election’s transparency by committing systematic, widespread fraud which led to a fraudulent announcement of preliminary results.”

Abdullah’s team has reiterated that they hope the Electoral Complaints Commission will address their complaints based on the law.

The team has assured the people that they will defend their “clean” votes.

Meanwhile, President Ghani’s State Builder campaign team in a statement thanked the people for their patience and participation in the elections and said they appreciate the election commission for holding the process.

The Council of Presidential Candidates in a statement issued on Sunday afternoon said they do not accept the preliminary results of the presidential election and suggest the establishment of a “national participation government” to end the “crisis.”
