Elections Should Bring Stability, Not Crisis: Abdullah

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah on Monday said that the upcoming presidential elections should lead the country towards stability, not a crisis, as he stressed on transparency in the electoral process.

Abdullah warned that the country will fall into an “unbearable tragedy” if the problems of 2014 presidential elections were repeated in the upcoming polls, scheduled for September 28.

“In the view of previous experiences, this time, the elections in Afghanistan should be a step forward towards a better future,” Abdullah said at a national forum titled Promoting Women’s Participation in Elections. “The repetition of an election similar to 2014 presidential elections will be a tragedy and the people of Afghanistan will not able to compensate it.”

A senior official of the European Union at the event meanwhile stressed the need for strong participation of Afghan women in the elections.

“We should collectively oppose and resist any kind of harassment against the women in the context of the electoral process. The government should be made accountable for that,” the Ambassador and Head of European Union Delegation in Afghanistan Pierre Mayaudon said.

The EU Ambassador emphasized that the presidential election is a moment for women to have their voices heard.

“Women make half of society. Women have always played a key role in Afghanistan’s political, economic and cultural arenas,” the chairperson of the Independent Election Commission, Hawa Alam Nuristani, said.

On Monday, the election commission issued credential letters to the presidential candidates with one of the candidates, Ghulam Farooq Nijrabi, refused to receive the letter, saying he will not trust transparency of the election process unless systematic reforms are brought in the election management body of the country.
