Timely Election A Red Line For IEC: Official

A senior official of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Thursday said that timely presidential election is a redline for the electoral body and that all preparations are in full swing for the polls which have been scheduled for September 28.

Head of the IEC secretariat, Habib-Ur-Rahman Nang said voter list has been prepared in hard and electronic copies and that this would prevent fraud by 90 percent.

According to him, at least 19,000 biometric devices have been sent to the commission by the Central Statistics Organization where they were kept following last year’s parliamentary elections.

“We will hold the election. The sixth of Meezan [September 28] is a red line for us. All [election] materials have arrived. Other required materials will arrive soon,” Mr. Nang said.

Mr. Nang said that all the centers where the voter registration process was conducted, are ready for serving as polling centers.

He called on Afghan forces to ensure the security of the upcoming election.

“Hard copies of voter list will be sent to all polling centers,” Mr. Nang added.

The Afghan government vowed to provide all required faculties for holding a timely election.

“We will use all resources in order to hold a fair, transparent and timely election. No doubt, there is the required will in the commission and in the government to hold a timely election,” said Omid Maisam, a spokesman for Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah’s office.

Critics still remain skeptical about the upcoming election and say that the election timeline will be affected by the ongoing peace process.
