COVID-19: 2,202 New Cases, 73 Deaths Reported in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Public Health on Tuesday reported 2,202 new positive cases of COVID-19 out of 4,366 samples tested in the last 24 hours.

The ministry also reported 73 deaths and 494 recoveries from COVID-19 in the same period.

Afghanistan has so far recorded 107,857 positive cases and 4,366 deaths from COVID-19.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the number of deaths from COVID-19 globally is more than 3,874,365 and the number of known global coronavirus cases is 178,827,648.

Wahid Majrooh, the acting minister of Public Health, said on Tuesday the situation in the country will be "critical" in terms of COVID-19 infections for another week.

“The situation has not changed and the closing of schools, universities and the restricted access to government ministries will continue,” Majrooh said.

In less than two weeks, more than 200 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been admistereted

Health officials said that with the increase of the positive cases in the country, “the demands for the vaccine have also increased.”

“Figures show that in each vaccination center about 600 people a day receive the COVID-19 vaccine,” said officials. So far, over 800,000 people including teachers and health workers and 200,000 security force members have been vaccinated.

Only 150,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine are in the country now, the officials said.

Afghanistan started vaccinations this week after the arrival of 700,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from China, which treats only 350,000 people.

The demand is still “very high for the vaccine” in the country while Afghanistan has over 34 million population, said officials.
