Family Says Doctors' Negligence Caused Injuries to Newborn

A family in Kabul claimed that their baby was harmed during birth as a result of negligence of the medical staff at the Rabia Balkhi Maternity Hospital.

The members of the family claimed to have financial difficulties, and they asked the hospital's officials to assist them in caring for the newborn.

"I screamed three times to come, this is a problem, no one came, when the baby was born, he fell to the ground and cried once, when he picked up the baby, he was injured,” the mother of the newborn baby stated.

"Treat him so that he gets well, raising a child is not simple," Usman’s mother added.

"We are struggling with economic difficulties. We visit the public hospitals in order for them to address our problems. What should we do if this child turns out to be insane or defective in the future?” said the grandfather of the baby.

However, officials of Rabia Balkhi Maternity Hospital denied the claim, saying that the baby was ill before birth.

"To the extent that we have examined him so far, the issue was when he was born. When he was born, he had the same problem--that his limbs and legs were crooked,” Zakia Aziz, head of the hospital told TOLOnews.

In Kabul, there are now six hospitals for women.
