Spike in Heat-Related Illnesses Among Children

Doctors at the Indira Gandhi Children's Hospital said that in the past week, cases of malaria, typhoid, food poisoning, and diarrhea -- which is a major disease among children -- have increased.

The doctors at this hospital said that in the past seven days, 1,443 patients have been registered with them.

"In the past week, almost 4,000 patients came to us, among whom 1,443 suffered from seasonal diseases, and they were provided with the necessary treatment," said Hefazatullah Haqyar Safi, a doctor.

"Patients in different sections, including typhoid, diarrhea, food poisoning, and a number of other microbial conditions, but these diseases are numerous and among them, diarrhea increases significantly in hot weather," said Mohammad Arif Hassanzai, another doctor.

A number of patients' caretakers said that due to the extreme heat, their children have become ill.

"Since Thursday, he has been hospitalized in a private hospital with no result, suffering from diarrhea and vomiting," said Gul Sanga, a patient's caretaker.

"My little girl was very sick. We came to Indira Gandhi Hospital at 2 am, they examined her and said she needed to be hospitalized, so we admitted her," said Abdullah, another patient caretaker.

The Ministry of Public Health said that serious attention is being given to these patients in all provinces of the country.

Sharafat Zaman Amarkhel, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health, said: "The Ministry of Public Health has been working on treatment centers and necessary medicines in various provinces to better address the people's needs, and our treatment centers are fully prepared."

Earlier, the Ministry of Public Health said that in the last seven months of the past year, nearly 200,000 children in the country had been afflicted with various seasonal diseases.
