Dengue Fever, Malaria Up, Other Ailments Down in Afghanistan: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported an increase in dengue fever and malaria cases in August compared to July.

According to the WHO report, dengue fever cases increased by 10%, and malaria cases surged by 153% in August.

The report also noted a decrease in other diseases such as acute diarrhea, Congo fever, measles, and acute respiratory diseases.

Details from the WHO report on these diseases are as follows:

Dengue Fever:
437 cases reported
No fatalities
1.10% increase in cases compared to July

Acute Diarrhea:
23,801 cases reported
10 fatalities
24% decrease in cases compared to July
Congo Fever:
170 cases reported
13 fatalities
43.5% decrease in cases compared to July

Malaria:
11,714 cases reported
1 fatality
152.9% increase in cases compared to July
Measles:
5,584 cases reported
31 fatalities
28.2% decrease in cases compared to July

Acute Respiratory Diseases:
62,871 cases reported
153 fatalities
19.6% decrease in cases compared to July

COVID-19:
682 cases reported
8 fatalities
17.7% decrease in cases compared to July

Some doctors attribute the decrease in these diseases to early diagnosis and better screening processes.

Doctor Munir Ahmad Kamal said, "The reduction in these diseases is due to early diagnosis and improved screening. Effective diagnosis requires well-equipped laboratories and adequate facilities to ensure patients are identified and treated promptly."

Doctor Syed Abdullah Ahmadi said, "The WHO reports are based on data from areas with accessible health services. I believe the statistics should also be sourced from the Epidemiology Center of the Ministry of Public Health."

According to the WHO report, the organization provided health services to 666,250 people through 746 health centers across 286 districts in August.
