Abdul Wali Haqqani, Deputy Minister of Public Health, said that 1.5 million people in the country are facing vision impairment.
Abdul Wali Haqqani, speaking at an event organized by the Ministry to mark World Sight Day, added that each year, 25,000 people in the country lose one of their eyes.
The Deputy Minister of Public Health said: "1.5 million people are facing vision impairment, and every year, 25,000 people lose one of their eyes in Afghanistan, despite 80% of these cases being treatable."
At this event, the head of primary care services at the Ministry of Public Health also announced a 5-year plan aimed at treating eye diseases in the country.
Zabihullah Ariz, Head of Primary Care, said: "We aim to have a comprehensive strategy in the next five years to address challenges in eye disease treatment so that all Afghans can access eye care services."
said Agha Mohammad Abid Tutakhil, an official of the Public Health Ministry.
Eye Care Coordinator at the Ministry of Public Health, said that this year, 3,772 eye surgeries have been performed in eleven provinces by specialists and mobile teams from the Eye Care Department, with plans for an additional 2,000 surgeries in the country.
Agha Mohammad Abid Tutakhel, Eye Care Coordinator, said: "Approximately 3,772 cataract surgeries have been performed by the Eye Department and expert teams in eleven provinces, including Logar, Bamyan, Ghani Khel District of Nangarhar, Ghazni, Nuristan, Badakhshan, Tagab District of Kapisa, Panjshir, Farah, and Dehrawood District of Uruzgan."
According to the Ministry of Public Health, eye medications worth 2.5 million dollars will be purchased for eight districts, totaling 456,000 doses.
