Health officials in Laghman province said that last year, more than 1,200 thalassemia patients received free medical services at the Laghman Provincial Hospital.

According to officials, up to five thalassemia patients visit this hospital daily, and young volunteers donate blood for them.

Payenda Mohammad, head of the Laghman Provincial Hospital, told TOLOnews:  
"Last year, 1,211 individuals came to this hospital to receive blood. If we divide this number by days, it means four to five thalassemia patients come to the hospital each day."

Ahmad Nabi, one of the hospital’s doctors, said: "We have a list of volunteers. Whenever someone needs blood, we call them, and the volunteers come to donate. The problems of these patients are solved through the help of volunteers."

Meanwhile, some patient caretakers are calling for more free blood donations for their loved ones.

Faheem Khan, a patient caretaker, said:  "My brother suffers from this disease. I ask young people and everyone to help us and donate blood."

Baheer, a resident of Laghman, said:  "If our blood donation can save a life, we are ready to help. It is a duty for young people to come forward and donate blood."

Officials at the Laghman Provincial Hospital said that they have created special groups on social media to quickly mobilize young volunteers for blood donation when needed.
