Afghanistan: COVID-19 Cases Over 10,000

The Ministry of Public Health on Sunday reported 584 new cases of COVID-19 out of 1,206 samples tested in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 10,582 and adding to the concerns of experts who insist health measures be taken seriously to stop the spread of the virus.

The Kabul lockdown-- which was eased over the last 10 days-- became stricter once again, leaving the city empty even as the public celebrates Eid al-Fitr after a month of fasting for Ramadan.

The relaxed enforcement of the lockdown, according to the public health minister, raised the number of positive cases by 50 percent.

Kabul has the highest number of positive cases in the country over the past 24 hours (324), followed by Herat (100).

The lowest number of cases is in the eastern province of Laghman, with one case only.

The ministry has reported two deaths in the last 24 hours, one in Kabul and another in Kunduz. Meanwhile, 35 patients total have recovered, from Balkh (6), Nangarhar (3), Wardak (20), Kunduz (4) and Bamiyan (2).

According to the ministry, there are 9,289 active cases of COVID-19 in the country.

So far, the Ministry of Public Health has tested 30,623 samples, according to a statement by the ministry.

Total known coronavirus deaths in the country is 218 and the number of recovered COVID-19 patients is 1,075 countrywide.
