COVID-19 Cases on Rise in Herat: Health Dept

Suspected cases of COVID-19 are again rising in Herat province, the provincial health department said on Saturday, citing the public's indifference to health guidelines as one of the core factors behind the rise.

According to the statistics of the Herat health department, over 700 people are appearing for testing in COVID-19 centers on daily basis and 50 percent of the tests are proved positive.

“Based on the statistics that arrived from the labs, more than 50 percent of the cases are positive,” said Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, the head of Herat's health department.

“People must take it seriously, because Eid is getting closer, if we do not respect social distancing and health guidelines, I think there will a human catastrophe,” said Farhad Sarem, a doctor in Herat.

5,423 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 virus in Herat. Of the figure, 162 patients died and 3,751 recovered.

This comes amid fear about the outbreak of a second wave of the virus in Afghanistan.

Previously, local officials in Herat said that over 1,500 Afghan migrants are returning to Afghanistan from Iran and this could lead to a further spread of the virus.

“The people are not wearing face masks in the city,” said a resident in Herat Aryan Najibi.

“From 100 people, not even one person is wearing a face mask, our expectation from the people is to wear face masks in the city,” said Farhad, a resident in Herat.

There are 35,988 active cases of COVID-19 in Afghanistan. From the number, 1225 have so far died and 24,573 recovered.
