The sixth round of Sanda Wang, a Wushu martial art competition, ended on Wednesday in Kabul. More than 70 athletes from ten provinces participated in the two-day competition in Kabul and competed in eleven weight categories.
“Holding similar competitions would be a great experience for amateur athletes of this sport," said Said Rahman Yurish, chief of Afghanistan’s Wushu Federation.
Athletes who participated from the provinces said they had sufficient preparation to contest their rivals. “We are hopeful to get to the next round of competition by overcoming our opponents,” said an athlete.
“Athletes in this province are struggling from a lack of facilities, Sanda Wang sport has not launched in this province until now," said Mohammad Juma, one of the athletes from Ghazni province.
“The level of these competitions were very high," said Masoud, another athlete who participated in the competitions, adding that “two months ago, similar competitions among top athletes were held in Kabul. We are hopeful to get to the next round of the competition.”
Officials said the aim of launching this series of competitions is to select top athletes for the next round, which has been named “Last Fight” and will be held in Kabul in a month and will include the participation of foreign athletes.
