The International Cricket Council in a summit on Tuesday night made two new decisions regarding cricket in Afghanistan.  

The ICC board has appointed a working group to assess the future of cricket in Afghanistan.  

The group is comprised of Imran Khwaja, Ros McCollum, Lawson Naidoo and Ramiz Raja. According to a statement issued by the ICC, the group is tasked to report back over the status of Afghanistan cricket over the next months.  

The ICC expressed concerns over political interference in the Afghan cricket board, saying that the president of the board should be appointed based on law and proper procedure.

“The ICC Board is committed to continuing to support Afghanistan Cricket to develop both men’s and women’s cricket moving forward. We believe the most effective way for this to happen will be to support our members in their efforts to achieve this through its relationship with the new government,” said Greg Barclay, the chairman of the ICC Board.

“Cricket is fortunate to be in the position to influence positive change in Afghanistan with the national men’s team a source of great pride and unity in a country with a young population that has experienced more upheaval and change than most. We should protect that status and continue to try to influence change through the ACB but will continue to closely monitor the situation and take any decisions accordingly," he said.

Mirwais Ashraf, current president of the Afghan cricket board, and CEO Naseeb Khan traveled to the UAE to attend the meeting but there is no official details on whether they attended the summit or not.  

“A committee comprised of four members is formed. Ramiz Raja, head of the Pakistan Cricket Board is also a member of it. They will assess the Afghan cricket about whether political interference exists or not? I hope they prepare a good report on cricket in Afghanistan.” said Badam Gul, a cricket analyst.  

According to reports, the former president of the Afghan cricket board Azizullah Fazli also contacted the ICC board and introduced himself as the active president of the Afghanistan board.
