Afghanistan Hosts Regional Muay Thai Contest

Afghanistan will host a three-nation Muay Thai competition between athletes from Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, officials said.

The Muay Thai competition will be held in the southwestern province of Nimroz on Thursday, officials said, adding that more than 100 athletes will participate.

“We are happy to host the competitions. This competition is held at a high-level. The athletes from Pakistan and Iran will take part in it,” said Khalil Rasuli, general manager of the Muay Thai championship.

The Muay Thai competition is being hosted by Afghanistan for the first time. According to officials, six Iranian athletes, 27 Pakistan athletes and over 100 Afghan athletes will participate.

The athletes welcomed the championship and said that such competitions will improve their capability in Muay Thai.

“Such competitions are important for the athletes to improve,” said Wahid Alizada, a coach.

“I have prepared well to fight my opponents and I am ready to beat my Iranian opponent,” said Mashal Islamzai, a Muay Thai athlete.

Earlier, Yousuf Jahangir and Jafar Atifi, the two Afghan athletes, represented Afghanistan in the Muay Thai World Championships in Bangkok.

Jahangir won two back-to-back matches and made his way into the quarter final round. However, he lost the match in the quarter final round.
