The Afghanistan national cricket team triumphed in their third match of the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, defeating Papua New Guinea by 7 wickets to secure their place in the Super 8 round of the tournament.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, captain Rashid Khan led Afghanistan as they successfully chased down Papua New Guinea's target of 96 runs in just 15.1 overs with the loss of only three wickets.
Papua New Guinea, having batted first, set a target of 96 runs in 19.5 overs before being bowled out completely.
For Afghanistan, Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled brilliantly, taking three wickets for just 16 runs in 4 overs, and was named the player of the match.
In batting, Gulbadin Naib scored the most runs for Afghanistan, making 49 runs off 36 balls.
After the match, Afghan captain Rashid Khan credited the victory to a strong start by the Afghan bowlers and stated that this win is a significant achievement for Afghanistan.
The International Cricket Council officially confirmed Afghanistan's place among the super eight teams in the World Cup.
Afghanistan is scheduled to play their final match of this stage against the West Indies on June 18.
