Historic Win: Afghanistan Defeats Australia by 21 Runs

In a thrilling match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, the Afghanistan national cricket team emerged victorious against Australia, winning by 21 runs.

After winning the toss, Australia opted to bowl first. The Afghan team set a challenging target of 149 runs, losing 6 wickets in the process.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz played a stellar innings, scoring 60 runs off 49 balls, while Ibrahim Zadran contributed significantly with 51 runs off 48 balls.

Gulbadin Naib's exceptional performance in the bowling department earned him the Player of the Match title. He dismissed four key Australian batsmen: Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Glenn Maxwell, and Pat Cummins, sealing a memorable victory for Afghanistan.

Naveen-ul-Haq also made a significant contribution in the bowling section, taking three wickets.

Afghan team captain Rashid Khan also called this victory against Australia a massive achievement for Afghanistan.

“It’s a massive win for us as a team and a nation. Beating Australia is a great feeling, it is something we missed out on in the 2023 ODI World Cup and also the 2022 World Cup in Australia,” Rashid Khan said.
In the second round of the Super 8, Afghanistan lost their first match to India by 47 runs.

Following the defeat against India, this significant victory has kept Afghanistan's hopes alive for the World Cup semi-finals.

The Afghan team will play its third match of the Super 8 against Bangladesh on Tuesday (June 25).
