Officials at the Afghanistan Football Federation told Tolonews that the English coach has unilaterally ended his contract after his salary was not paid for several months.
According to officials, the banking restrictions in the country led to the situation.

Ashley Westwood was assigned for a one-year term as Afghanistan national football team coach in November 2023 following the clashes between some national players and Abdullah Al Mutairi, the former coach of the team.

He was praised for his leadership and coaching of the Afghan team during the 2026 Football World Cup qualification and 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualification.

Ashley Westwood has joined Hong Kong national football as coach.
