Ali Reza Asahi, World Champion Bodybuilder, Laid to Rest in Kabul

The funeral ceremony of Ali Reza Asahi, the former member of Afghanistan's national bodybuilding and fitness team and two-time world champion in the masters category, was held today (Friday) in Kabul.

Ali Reza Asahi had recently secured a gold medal for Afghanistan in the masters category at the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championships in the Maldives, and won a gold medal in the 14th round of the 2023 World Bodybuilding Championships hosted in Seoul, South Korea.

He had also recently obtained an internationally recognized coaching certificate from the World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF).

Ali Reza Asahi passed away Thursday evening due to a heart attack at one of the capital’s hospitals at the age of 51.

Former President Hamid Karzai, officials from the sports administration, the bodybuilding federation, and Rashid Khan Arman, the Afghan cricketer, described his passing as a great loss for Afghan sports.

Hamed, Ali Reza Asahi's son, said: "My father was a champion and worked very hard to achieve this title."

Mohammad Hossaini, Ali Reza Asahi's brother, stated: "Medical examinations indicate that he suffered a heart attack. From the moment his condition worsened, it took twenty minutes to reach the hospital, which was quite delayed."

Officials from the Afghanistan Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation praised his achievements in national and international events and called his death a major loss for Afghanistan.

Noorulhuda Shirzad, head coach of the national bodybuilding and fitness team, said: "He had been a member of the national team for over ten years. As he mentioned in his interviews, he previously practiced martial arts before transitioning to bodybuilding."

Several sports officials and coaches attended Ali Reza Asahi’s funeral and emphasized their support for his family.

Bawar Hotak, deputy of the National Olympic Committee and head of the Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, said: "This is a great loss not only for the Asahi family but for all citizens of the country. He was not just a champion of the federation but a champion of Afghanistan."

Mohammad Basheer Tareqi, the national Taekwondo team coach, stated: "This man's father dedicated his entire life to the people of Afghanistan and their service; now it is our turn to do something for his family and children."
