MLC Officials Hope Afghan Players Can Join Despite US Restrictions

Officials from the United States’ Major League Cricket (MLC) say they are hopeful that Afghan players will not be affected by Donald Trump’s recent travel ban and that they will participate in this year’s league.

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the officials have stated that they are working on different options, including ensuring that players arrive in the US before the ban takes effect.

A spokesperson for the league said: "We're continuing to monitor the situation and are working with the relevant authorities to minimize travel disruptions for overseas players ahead of the start of Major League Cricket next week."

US President Donald Trump recently imposed a travel ban on citizens of 12 countries, including Afghanistan, and tightened travel conditions for citizens of seven other countries.

The ban will take effect on June 9.

Although athletes participating in the Olympics and other major sports leagues are exempt from Trump’s ban, it is not yet clear whether Major League Cricket will be classified among those major leagues.

In Major League Cricket, Rashid Khan, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Naveen-ul-Haq play for MI New York; Gulbadin Naib, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Waqar Salamkheil for Seattle Orcas; and Noor Ahmad for Texas Super Kings.

The report states that some Afghan players have already arrived in the US for the league.

Major League Cricket’s 2025 season is set to begin on June 12.
