The national taekwondo fighters from Afghanistan topped the Asian Taekwondo Open Championship – G1 in India by getting nine medals, including four gold medals, three silver, and two bronze medals. 

The International Taekwondo Federation has adopted a new scoring system for the competitions. It has considered 10 for the champion and six for the second top runner.

Taekwondo fighters from Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Australia, Zimbabwe, Nepal, Kazakhstan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Japan, Croatia, Syria, and Bangladesh have attended the event which has been held in the city of Hyderabad in India.

Afghan athletes got four gold medals, three silver and two bronze medals in this competition.

“I congratulate the nation and the players for this victory. Another round of the competitions will begin today (Saturday),” said Najib Sikandari, head of Afghanistan’s Taekwondo Federation.

“We had a strong team. There were strong teams in the championship, including Iran, Saudi Arabia and Australia. Our athletes won six matches and achieved a gold medal,” said Abdul Rahim Alizai, acting coach of the national taekwondo team.

Ahmad Bakhshi, Husain Lutfi, Ramish Husaini, and Mustafa Qarloq won gold medals. Meanwhile, Hekmatullah Zain, Ahmad Siyar Khaliqi and Nisar Ahmad Abdulrahimzai got silver medals; and Mohammad Ashraf Shukran and Abdul Sattar Shahi got bronze medals in the championship. 

Twenty-seven athletes from Afghanistan attended the Asian Open Taekwondo Championship in India.
