Afghan Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) champion Ahmad Wali Hotak was attacked on Sunday night by a group of unknown men in Kabul city, Kabul police said Monday.
According to Kabul police Hotak was shot and stabbed in the stomach by a group of at least five men in PD12, in Bagrami area, in Kabul.
Hotak was admitted to Emergency Hospital where he is undergoing treatment, police said.
The motive behind the attack is not yet known but investigations are being conducted.
Hotak recently returned to Afghanistan after a five month training program in the US in preparation for his scheduled MMA fight in Russia.
Hotak was due to leave Kabul on Monday for Moscow for Friday’s fight against Russian Maxim Shchekin.
According to his family, Hotak left home at about 10pm to visit his coach. The family later heard a gunshot and went out to look. They found him wounded in his car.
According to them he sustained a slight bullet wound to his stomach and a stab wound to his head.
