Kabul Women Find A Sense Of Peace Through New Yoga Studio

Calm and quiet, taking deep breaths and focusing on their bodies, a group of Afghan women go through their yoga paces at a new studio in Kabul.

Fakhria, an Afghan woman, who started the studio, says her aim is to help women build their self-esteem and confidence.

She said she has practiced yoga for seven years and is a trained medic.

The women taking part in her yoga sessions have said they are defying the odds and breaking taboos.

“When you do meditation and you certainly focus on your body, you find a calmness,” Masooma Kargar said.

“Yoga maintains one’s body. For instance, there are people whose shoulders are out of alignment. Yoga improves one’s posture,” another yoga enthusiast, Tahira, said.

She has worked yoga for seven years and she has been trained in management and medics.

“The goal of establishing this yoga center was to help women build their confidence and achieve a sense of self-worth,” said Fakhria.

Fakhria, also works as a manager of a kindergarten, at a beauty parlor and has a small web development company.

She said however that she has not been alone in this journey but has had the full support of her husband.
