Chinese Envoy Accuses US of 'Suppressing' China

Hostile Western forces are making unscrupulous efforts to suppress and smear China by fabricating lies and slanders on Xinjiang-related issues, which could ultimately have a harmful global effect, Chinese Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai said on Friday.

A video displayed earlier on Friday at the press briefing of the Chinese Foreign Ministry showed a clip of Lawrence Wilkerson, chief of staff of former US Secretary of State Colin Powell, listing the main three purposes of the US military presence in Afghanistan, with one of these being its efforts to destabilize China.

In an August 2018 speech delivered at the Ron Paul Institute, Wilkerson said that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was looking to achieve this by forming unrest among the large Uygur population in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Recent claims made by enterprises such as Western retail brands H and M and Nike of refusing to use Xinjiang cotton have also triggered widespread denunciation and resistance from the Chinese public.

Ambassador Cui said that behind the so-called Xinjiang cotton boycott are the sinister intentions of anti-China forces in some Western countries including the United States to smear China and suppress Chinese industries.

"I think it actually reveals that the United States and some other countries, as well as some political forces, intend to stem, split and suppress China. It is based on the reason that they spared no efforts in fabricating many absurd rumors with no bottom line and spreading them all across the world using their discursive power. In the case, I also warned the CNN reporter whether they remembered stories about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and also stories happening in Syria and Libya. I'm wondering if they can tell the truth now and facts show that everything at that time was fabricated," he said.

Cui also warned that some multinational groups deliberately disturbing China's growth will have dangerous and harmful global consequences, with even the world economy being put at risk through such actions.

"I'm quite willing to warn some multinational companies that it will be the beginning of danger if they would follow those special needs of some interest groups and deliberately disturb and even sabotage the market operation, and the normal operation of global supply chain and industrial chain. They should think over what it would mean to the whole world economy and even their own company interests. And the truth for what they do is they want to split China, disturb China's development and block out China's modernization process. I always think it is racism that caused many of their actions and policies," he said.
