Israeli forces retreated from several Gaza City districts after a week-long offensive, resulting in many deaths and significant destruction, according to residents and rescue services. 

The operation is part of Israel's 10-month campaign against Hamas. 

The Gaza Civil Emergency Service reported recovering about 60 Palestinian bodies from Tel Al-Hawa and Sabra neighborhoods. 

Despite the withdrawal, Israeli snipers and tanks remain in some areas, making it unsafe for residents to return.

The Israeli military claims its actions aim to dismantle Hamas capabilities and adhere to international law, contrasting this with Hamas's methods. 

Hamas and Islamic Jihad reported fierce resistance against Israeli forces, though Israel has not commented on these claims.

Gaza City, home to many of Gaza's residents, was heavily damaged in 2023, with many Palestinians returning to the ruins. 

Israel has ordered another evacuation, but safe relocation options are limited as Israel controls Gaza's borders and continues attacks in central and southern regions.

Arab mediators, backed by the United States, are trying to reach a ceasefire deal that would free Israelis held hostage by Hamas in return for many Palestinians jailed by Israel.
