RSF 2024 Report: Escalating Violence, Suppression of Journalists Worldwide

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in its 2024 annual report expressed concern over the alarming increase in attacks on journalists, especially in conflict zones.

The report stressed that half of the journalist killings recorded this year occurred in war zones.

According to the report, in 2024, Gaza has become the most dangerous region in the world for journalists, with one-third of journalists killed during their duties this year being targeted by the Israeli military.

The report reads: "Since October 2023, more than 145 journalists have been killed by the Israeli military. Reporters Without Borders has also filed four complaints with the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding war crimes against journalists by Israel."

Asia was the second most dangerous region for journalists in 2024 due to the high number of journalist deaths in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

According to RSF statistics, the number of imprisoned journalists worldwide increased by 7.2% in 2024, primarily due to new arrests in Russia and Israel.

The organization stated that China, with 124 journalists, Myanmar with 61, Israel with 41, and Belarus with 40 journalists, were the four largest prisons for journalists in 2024.

The report added that currently, 55 journalists are being held hostage globally, 70% of whom are being detained in Syria.

Reporters Without Borders has also called for immediate action to end violence against journalists and to combat the impunity of those responsible for these crimes.
