US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff will be imposed on commercial imports from Canada and Mexico, while a 10% tariff will be applied to imports from China.
He added that only the tariff on imported oil from Canada will temporarily remain at 10%.
Trump emphasized that this action was done through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) as the US is facing threats from illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
According to this law, the US president can raise tariffs, halt transactions, and impose economic measures against foreign entities that pose a threat to US national interests during a declared national emergency.
Trump clarified that these tariffs have been imposed on Canada, Mexico, and China due to the threats posed by illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
He stressed that the tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods will remain in place until these countries take effective measures to curb illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Trump stated, "I made a promise on my campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favor of it.”
