Ukraine and the United States have finally signed an agreement to establish a joint investment fund for the reconstruction of Ukraine after months of tense negotiations.
The agreement grants the US special privileges in extracting Ukraine’s natural resources.
According to reports, the agreement, signed under the name “United States-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund” could facilitate continued military and technical support from Washington to Kyiv in its war with Russia. Moreover, it provides the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth elements and other valuable resources, which are of strategic importance to America’s advanced industries.
Scott Bessent, the US Secretary of the Treasury, stated about the agreement: “Thanks to President Trump’s tireless efforts to secure a lasting peace, I am glad to announce the signing of today’s historic economic partnership agreement between the United States and Ukraine establishing the United States-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund.”
In exchange for granting the US access to rare resources, Ukraine gains a degree of assurance regarding continued political and economic support from Washington in its war against Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said: “If there are any new prospects, new support, new support packages, the United States of America can probably set certain conditions with an understanding that this (Trump’s) team will do nothing for us for free. They say this officially."
This agreement comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, and the political climate in the US—especially with Donald Trump’s recent positions—has become more complex regarding ongoing support for Ukraine.
