Amid soil and smoke, somewhere between tents and destroyed houses, the cries of hungry Palestinian children echo.
Even in the lines for charity kitchens, they rarely get their turn.
Mais, a Palestinian child waiting for food, said: “The number is huge just to get food. Everyone is rushing in; how can I fill my plate? I can’t. Everyday is like this. People come from inside and outside the camp for food. I’ve been here since early morning. I tried to rush in to get some food, but I can’t.”
Mohammad Al-Helou, a supervisor of the communal kitchen, said: “The number of displaced people keeps increasing. Due to evacuations carried out by the Israeli army in Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun, displacement to this area is rising. We cook 500 meals, but the number of people who come to receive food is in the thousands. Everyone here relies primarily on the meal provided by this kitchen, and half of those who come leave without getting any food.”
Three days after limited humanitarian aid was permitted, the UN says this aid has yet to reach those in need.
Although Israel claims that nearly 100 aid trucks have entered Gaza, images from Gaza show children standing in line for hours at charity kitchens.
Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN, said: "None of the supplies have been able to leave the Kareem Shalom loading area. This is because by yesterday evening, Israeli authorities had only allowed our teams to go through one area that was highly congested that we felt was insecure and where we felt looting was highly likely to take place given the prolonged deprivation in Gaza since the blockade by the Israeli authorities for over 11 weeks. We hope that will change very soon. The discussions are ongoing as we speak between our colleagues and the Israeli security authorities.”
While Israeli assaults continue unabated and Gaza's skies are filled with smoke from the bombings, global pressure on the Israeli government to end military operations is mounting. Yet, none of these efforts have been able to bring bread, security, or a basic life to these children.
