New Arrests of PTM Protesters, says Pakistan People's Party

There are reports that the Pakistani government has made new crackdowns against several political activists who were demanding the release of Manzoor Pashteen, the leader of the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM).

The response of the Pakistani government to the PTM activists has drawn criticism from some of Pakistan’s powerful political parties, including The Pakistan Peoples Party, and the party's leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

“Political arrests have started again. Manzoor Pashteen, a member of the parliament, and several youths who were participating in peaceful protests, were detained and accused of treason. the Pakistan People's Party strongly condemns these arrests,” said Zardari.

Meanwhile, Mohsin Dawar, another key member of PTM, said that those who are raising their voice for freedom are being accused of treason against the nation.

Meanwhile, dozens of people in Kabul protested in front of the Pakistani embassy for the second time.

The protesters called on the Pakistani government to release the PTM leaders.

Pakistan’s Awami Worker’s Party also announced that several of its activists and members were detained following their support for the PTM leader.

Manzoor Pashteen, leader of the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM), was arrested on Sunday night by Pakistani police in Tehkaal, Peshawar.

PTM is a Pashtun-rights group that has called for the de-mining of the former tribal areas and greater freedom of movement within tribal areas. It has called for an end to “extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and unlawful detentions,” according to reports.

According to PTM members, almost 30,000 people from the two provinces – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan – have gone missing over the past 10 years.

Before this, PTM announced it will hold its next rally in Quetta on February 2 to observe the anniversary of Arman Lonri's death.

Arman Lonri allegedly died during a police crackdown on a sit-in in Loralai last year.
