A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft has crashed in a residential area near the Karachi Airport on Friday, Pakistan’s Dawn News reported.

PIA spokesperson Abdul Sattar confirmed the the crash to Dawn News, and said the A-320 was carrying 90 passengers and was flying from Lahore to Karachi.

According to Dawn, footage shows smoke rising from the site of the crash, and there are reports of ambulances and rescue officials arriving at the scene.

Pakistan’s Geo News also reported on the incident, saying that the plane crashed near the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi a minute before landing.

Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority sources told Geo News that communication with the plane was cut off one minute before its landing, and said an estimated that 91 passengers were aboard the flight--85 in economy class and six in the business class.

Last year, a PIA aircraft avoided an accident after it skidded off the runway while landing at Gilgit airport, according to Pakistani media reports.
