Exclusive Interview With Zalmay Khalilzad On Afghan Peace

In this program, TOLOnews’ Lotfullah Najafizada interviews Zalmay Khalilzad, the United States Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, about developments in the peace process.

In this interview, Khalilzad says the integration of a strong, unified negotiating team under government’s umbrella is needed for the peace process.

He says he will push for two points in next round of Doha talks – first to encourage Taliban to sit with the “legitimate government” of Afghanistan and second to encourage them to agree to a ceasefire.

Khalilzad adds that Saudi Arabia has a critical role in the peace process - more so than any country in the region – and its financial support to Pakistan will be conditional, based on its support to peace. He says Pakistan has taken steps towards peace but needs to play bigger, practical role.
