App Launched in Kabul to Raise Intl Law of War Awareness

An application called “Conflict Has Rules Too” was launched in Kabul by the humanitarian organization Geneva Call on Tuesday to introduce and help Afghans understand and respect the rules of war.

The app development and launch are supported by the European Union, Sweden and Australia, according to a statement by the institution.

The organization explained the app and the reasons for its development:

"The respect for international humanitarian law in conflict situations is essential for the protection of civilians and communities in Afghanistan. Through the app, Geneva Call wants users to be better equipped to relate to and engage with humanitarian norms. The app presents an interactive way of engaging fighters, armed actors, communities and everyone concerned, towards understanding that war has rules that must be respected."

The “Conflict Has Rules Too” mobile app, available in Pashto, Dari and English, is freely available on the Google Play Store. It can be downloaded, for now, on Android-compatible devices.

According to the organization: "Geneva Call is embedded at a district level in Afghanistan to promote sustainable dialogue between communities, local authorities and regional fighting forces on the reduction of violence and strengthening of inter-community relations, around the respect for humanitarian norms."
