Indian PM Inaugurates 105th Science Congress

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the 105th Indian Science Congress which will take place from March 16 to 20 at Imphal in Manipur.

Themed “Reaching the Unreached Through Science and Technology”, the conference will see social sciences and science coming together.

According to India’s firstpost.com, Modi spoke about "scientific social responsibility" through science and technology in his opening speech.

Organized by the Manipur University, 5,000 delegates from around the country, and 2,000 scientists along with four Nobel Laureates are expected to attend the event.

Modi meanwhile urged people to encourage scientific interest among the youth and said every scientist must dedicate “100 hours every year with 100 students”, firstpost.com reported.

Reiterating that India needs to be ready for the future, he said technology will play a vital role in services such as healthcare, education, and banking.

Firstpost.com also reported that machine learning, artificial intelligence, e-mobility, 5G telecommunication, and data analytics will aid in creating a smart city and industries, said Modi.

Modi meanwhile also encouraged Indian scientists to work towards affordable healthcare and to find cures to diseases such as sickle cell anemia, malaria, Japanese Encephalitis etc.

Increasing non-fossil fuel capacity was also important he said.

“Our government has already given the go-ahead to establish the third LIGO detector in the country. It will expand our knowledge in basic sciences in the areas of lasers, light waves and computing. I am told that our scientists are working tirelessly to make it a reality.”
