The Afghan cricket team directly qualified for the Super 12 state of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
The Afghan team played two warmup matches with Bangladesh and Pakistan. On Oct. 17, the Afghan team crushed Bangladesh by 62 runs in Brisbane.
The warmup match between Afghanistan and Pakistan was called off due to rain.
Team Afghanistan played its first World Cup match on Oct. 22 against England in Perth. England won by 5 wickets while 11 balls remained. In bating for the Afghan team, Ibrahim Zadran made 32 runs of 32 balls and Usman Ghani scored 30 runs of 30 balls.
The match with New Zealand, which was set to be held on Oct. 26th in Melbourne, was canceled without a ball being bowled—with the two sides sharing one point.
On Oct. 28, the match between the Afghan team and Ireland in Melbourne was abandoned again due to rain.
Team Afghanistan lost its match against Sri Lanka on November 1 in Brisbane by 6 wickets.
Afghanistan won the toss against Sri Lanka and decided to bat first. Opening, wicket keeper batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 28 of 24 balls and Usman Ghani made 27 runs of 27 balls. In bowling, Mujeeb ur Rahman took two wickets for 24 runs and Rashid Khan took two wickets for 31.
The Afghan team again lost its last match in the T20 World Cup 2022; however, commentators said they played a good game.
Team Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bowl first. Naveenul Haq took three wickets for 21 and Fazal Haq Farooqi took two wickets for 29.
Gurbaz and Ghani opened batting for Afghanistan. Gurbaz scored 30 of 17 balls, Gulbuddin Naib scored 39 of 23 balls while Rashid Khan remained till the end of the match and took the Afghan team to last. Khan scored 48 of 23 balls and hit some strong sixes and fours in the latest over.
Team Afghanistan lost the match to Australia by four runs with all balls finished and three-wickets remaining in hand.
At the end of this tough journey of the Afghan cricket team, Mohammad Nabi has resigned as team captain. He posted a resignation letter on Twitter, saying that he and the team management and selection committee were not on the "same page" in recent tours.
