Afghanistan Ready For 2022 World Cup Qualifiers

The National Football Team will face Qatar in their opening group match in the 2022 World Cup Asia Qualifiers in Qatar on September 5. Their second match will be against Bangladesh on September 10.

Acting head of Afghanistan Football Federation, Yusuf Kargar, told TOLOnews that the Afghan squad will appear strong in the competition.

But he said that the federation has budget for two first matches against Qatar and Tajikistan but it will not be enough for next matches in the tournament.

“The annual budget for the football federation is not enough. Sixty percent of this budget has been spent,”

The General Director of Physical Education and Sport, Hafeez Wali Rahim, said he has sent a proposal to the Presidential Palace for funding of the event.

“We are awaiting the order of the Presidential Palace in this regard because the event needs a large amount of budget,” Mr. Rahim said.

Members of the national team said they hope to get a good result at the event.

“We want to focus on winning,” Farzad Ataee, member of the National Football Team, said.

“The [football] federation should have provided a training camp for us ahead of the competition,” said Yar Mohammad Zakarkhel, member of the national team.

Meanwhile, quoted in a report by Dhaka Tribune, Bangladesh’s National Football Team’s assistantcoach, Stuart Watkiss, said his team can defeat Afghanistan.

The Bangladesh coach expressed his expectation and the opponent’s playing style after their training session at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.

“The games we saw they were playing with one central striker with 4-3-3 formation,” he said, adding that “They have one really strong central defender. The full-backs don’t really attack too much to support. We can beat them but we have to play well. It will not be easy.”
