Helmand Hosts Local Football League

A local football league was kicked off in Helmand on Saturday with eight teams from the southern province which will continue for 56 days.

Football players from Helmand said that they face a lack of proper grounds.

“In winter, there are no facilities for playing football because there is no gymnasium in Helmand,” said Bismillah, member of a football team from Helmand.

“Gymnasium has lots of expenses to build but there is a need to be built so players can play,” said Samiullah, a footballer.

The province hosts the league at a time that at least 16 people were killed when an explosion targeted a local stadium during a football match last year in March.

The provincial football federation officials said that efforts are underway to address the complaints of the football players.

The head of Helmand Football Federation, Rangin Khan Daftani, said that the new leadership of the Afghanistan Football Federation is paying more attention to the improvement of the sport in the province.

“Now our activities have increased and more attention will be paid to football,” Daftani said.
