Profile: How Blind Wali Mohammad Became a Champion Runner

Wali Mohammad Noori, an Afghan athlete who lost his sight in a landmine explosion ten years ago in Helmand, has now become a popular champion runner at home and abroad.

This blind runner from Afghanistan, who is a victim of the war, is waiting for the war to end and for lasting peace to be established in the country.

Noori lost his site in a landmine blast in Helmand ten years ago when he was a soldier.

But this young man did not despair. After facing many difficulties and pursuing the running sport under the supervision of domestic and foreign coaches, he started to raise the country's flag at sporting events.

“Ten years ago, I was in the military and I was severely wounded in a landmine explosion in Helmand province and I lost both my eyes. I could not see anything when I woke up in the hospital. But it does not matter to me, I am ready to sacrifice my life for my homeland,” said Noori.

The blind runner says that in competitions held in England, France and the Netherlands, he was able to defeat his opponents in various sections and win medals for Afghanistan.

“We have athletes in football, we have boxers, but we do not have a blind athlete, this made me take the lead and start competing,” added Noori.

Noori who is a victim of the war, expects the current bitter days in the country to end.

He called on the parties involved in the war to end the violence.

“All Afghans want is to live in peace. War is enough. Lasting peace in Afghanistan is my only wish,” Noori said.

Noori wants to bring more honors to the country.

Noori is scheduled to represent Afghanistan in an international running competition in France in the near future.
