AFF Launches Afghanistan Olympic Football Team

The Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) on Wednesday announced the establishment of the first ever Afghanistan under-23 Olympic Football Team that will represent the country in the Olympic Games.

“We decided to have an Olympic team to represent the country in Olympic Games – same as other countries. We will support the team and we hope they will make us proud in the future. We will soon hold a friendly match for the team with one of our neighboring countries’ football teams,” the head of the National Olympic Committee Zahir Aghbar said.

“We are proud that we selected the best players from around the country for the Olympic Football team. I hope they are as successful as they were the South Asian Championships,” said Yusuf Kargar, the technical deputy head of the Afghanistan Football Federation.

Meanwhile, the coach of the 28-member team, Elyas Manochehr, said: “Our team will also represent Afghanistan in the Islamic Solidarity Games which will be held in Baku. They will start their exercises next week.”

The next Islamic Solidarity Games will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in May next year. In total, 15 sporting codes from Afghanistan will participate.
