Araghchi: Israel, UN to Blame If Global Nonproliferation Regime Collapes

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said that Israel struck the Arak heavy water nuclear facility, built under IAEA safeguards and in line with the 2015 nuclear agreement, during airstrikes targeting northern Iran on Thursday.

Araghchi condemned the attack, calling it a violation of the UN Charter and international law.

Referring to the today’s UN Security Council session, he urged the council to enforce its resolution protecting safeguarded nuclear facilities.

He warned: “If the Council now fails to act, it must explain to the international community why its legal principles apply only selectively on such a crucial matter. It will also hold ultimate responsibility, along with the Israeli regime, should the global nonproliferation regime one day collapse.”

The resolution deems military attacks on protected nuclear sites a threat to global nuclear security.

Reuters reported that today, the foreign ministers of Britain, France, Germany, and EU diplomat Kaja Kallas will meet with Araghchi in Geneva.

Ahead of the meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met separately with his British counterpart and spoke with the foreign ministers of Australia and Italy by phone to affirm that "Iran can never develop or acquire a nuclear weapon."

"Now is the time to put a stop to the grave scenes in the Middle East and prevent a regional escalation that would benefit no one," said British Foreign Minister David Lammy.

However, Araghchi told Iranian media Iran will never enter talks if Israeli strikes continue.
