Earthquake Injures 76 in Southwest Iran

An earthquake injured at least 76 people and damaged buildings in the southwestern Iranian city of Sisakht on Wednesday morning, Iran’s state media reported.

The 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck just after 8:30 am local time at only a depth of 8kms, the National Earthquake Information Center said.

State media said it caused extensive damage to property in the city, around 160 km northwest of the city of Shiraz, Reuters reported.

Iran’s IFP news meanwhile reported that 84 had been admitted to hospitals. One of the injured was reportedly in a critical condition.

Officials say assessment teams have been deployed to the quake-stricken areas of the province.

State media footage showed cracks in the walls of buildings in Sisakht which has a population of about 10,000.

Iran is prone to near-daily earthquakes as it sits on major fault lines.

Last November, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit villages and towns in Iran’s western Kermanshah province along the mountainous border with Iraq, killing at least 620 people and injuring thousands of others.

In 2003 as well, a magnitude 6.6 quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.
