China, Israel Top List of Worst Press Freedom Violators in 2024

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in its annual report has identified China, Israel, and Myanmar as the biggest violators of journalists' rights in 2024.

According to the report, at least 361 journalists were imprisoned worldwide in 2024 due to their professional activities.

The report emphasized that the main factors behind the increase in journalist imprisonments were continuous crackdowns by authoritarian regimes (China, Myanmar, Vietnam, Belarus, Russia), war (Israel, Russia), and political or economic instability (Egypt, Nicaragua, Bangladesh).

China topped the list with 50 journalists imprisoned, followed by Israel with 43 journalists. Myanmar, Belarus, and Russia were also consistently listed among the largest jailers of journalists.

Despite variations in circumstances across regions, all governments that imprisoned journalists employed similar tactics to suppress freedom of expression, highlighting a disheartening global trend in the violation of journalists' rights.
