Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and US President Donald Trump clashed at a White House meeting that ended in disaster on Friday, prompting an outpouring of reaction from across the globe.
Some members of Congress and US officials supported Trump and his running mate, J.D. Vance, while others called their behavior demeaning and shameful.
In addition to US officials, the leaders of France, Germany, Poland, the European Union, and the leaders of Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain also declared their support for Ukraine.
Mike Waltz, the US National Security Advisor, wrote on X: "President Trump is trying to achieve peace and this economic deal was part of it. Instead, President Zelensky chose to come into the Oval Office and downplay American contributions to defending Ukraine and disrespect our country."
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated: “What of course, we always recognize, and what's vitally important in the diplomatic world and the democratic world is that the people of Ukraine will decide those issues."
House of Representatives Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries in a statement stated: "President Trump and his administration continue to embarrass America on the world stage. Today’s White House meeting with the President of Ukraine was appalling and will only serve to further embolden Vladimir Putin, a brutal dictator."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa - the European Union's two top officials - told Zelenskiy in a joint post: "Your dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated: "No one wants peace more than the citizens of Ukraine! That is why we are jointly seeking the path to a lasting and just peace. Ukraine can rely on Germany – and on Europe."
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has supported Ukraine but also has strong ties to Trump, sought to strike a balance in her response. She suggested a summit involving the United States, European nations and allies to discuss how "to deal with the great challenges of today, starting with Ukraine."
"Every division of the West makes us all weaker and favours those who would like to see the decline of our civilisation," Meloni said in a statement.
"Respect to those who, since the beginning, have been fighting. Because they are fighting for their dignity, their independence, for their children and for the security of Europe,” French President Emmanuel Macron posted on X.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was among the first to show his support for Zelenskiy and Ukraine on social media, telling them: "You are not alone."
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas - a former prime minister of Estonia - was blunt in declaring her view that Washington could no longer lead the free world.
"Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge," she said.
"He retains his unwavering support for Ukraine and is playing his part to find a path forward to a lasting peace, based on sovereignty and security for Ukraine," said Spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
The meeting between Zelensky and Trump at the White House has escalated diplomatic tensions between Ukraine and the United States instead of strengthening their relations.
The confrontation between Trump and Zelensky has not only deepened the rift between Washington and Kyiv but also heightened tensions between the US and Europe. A meeting that was supposed to result in an agreement between the two sides ended differently.
