IRC: 122 Million People Forcibly Displaced Worldwide

The International Rescue Committee (IRC), citing new figures released by the United Nations, stated that 122 million people across the world are now forcibly displaced.

According to the committee, this number is equivalent to the combined population of Spain and the United Kingdom and has increased from 120 million last year.

The report notes: “Today’s UN figures show that the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide has reached a record high, surpassing 122 million — more than the combined populations of Spain and the United Kingdom. This number stood at 120 million last year.”

IRC said that most of these people were forced to leave their homes due to war and natural disasters, and that the number has doubled over the past decade.

According to the organization’s data, nearly 40 percent of all displaced persons are under the age of 18.

Climate-related displacement has also risen significantly, increasing from 26.3 million last year to 45.8 million this year, the report said.

One-third of all forcibly displaced people in the world come from just four war-affected countries: Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, and Ukraine, according to the report.
