Rouhani Says Friday’s Poll Is A Critical Juncture For Iran

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that Iran's presidential elections on Friday will place the country at a critical juncture, and its people must choose between peace or tension.

Reuters reported that Rouhani told a crowd of supporters at an indoor stadium, that he would not let Iran become isolated again if he became president and that he was seeking constructive and effective interaction with the world.

"We will not let Iran become isolated once again (crowd cheering) we would like to have constructive and effective interaction with the world."

"Over the last three years and half, the government stood up to those who exerted pressure on it to shut down social networks."

Meanwhile, the crowd in the stadium, estimated at way over 12,000, called out the names of Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi, opposition leaders who are currently under house arrest, and Mohammad Khatami, former Iranian pro-reform president who is under a media blackout by the establishment, reported Reuters.

They carried purple flags, the colour of Rouhani's campaign, as well as green flags, a sign of Mousavi's 2009 Green Movement.

However, Rouhani said he had written a letter to Iran’s Judiciary chief Sadeq Amoli Larijani and asked him to explain the legal basis for the ban.

"I wrote a letter to the head of Judiciary (Sadeq Amoli Larijani) and told him for what reason and under what law Mohammad Khatami (is subject to a media coverage ban?)."

The media is banned from publishing any news or images of Khatami or even mentioning his name in reports.

Reuters stated that his comments drew cheers from the supporters who held up photos of Khatami and Mousavi.

The election is seen largely as a referendum on Rouhani's outreach to the rest of the world following the country's landmark 2015 nuclear accord with world powers.
