A number of Afghan political analysts have criticized the United States for its hasty withdrawal, saying that it has left Afghanistan facing numerous challenges.

According to analysts, the resulting power vacuum and other rapid developments have left Afghanistan in a very uncertain situation.

“This withdrawal has three unpleasant consequences: the shameful fleeing of the president, a power vacuum, and a lack of a roadmap for Afghanistan’s future,” said Malek Setiz, an international relations analyst.

According to Setiz, if the Taliban do not use the situation wisely, Afghanistan will face more problems.

“Now it is up to the Taliban on how they are going to use the situation. If they act emotionally and limit their international relations, the situation will worsen,” he said.

Other analysts said the US left Afghanistan without achieving anything in the country and their withdrawal will have negative repercussions on the situation in the country.

The analysts said that the United States and the international community in the past 20 years failed to bring security, fight corruption or stop opium production. They said the situation exhausted the US's willingness to remain in the country.

“The Americans promoted terrorism and gave it international recognition. Opium production increased and the government they supported-- according to their own acknowledgement--was corrupt and dysfunctional,” said Abdul Wahid Taqat, a political analyst.

The US Department of Defense statistics show that in the past 20 years over 800,000 US soldiers and 25,000 US civilians have served in Afghanistan.

Some analysts called the US withdrawal an irresponsible exit that has jeopardized the achievements and values that the United States invested in over the last two decades.

“The repercussions of the irresponsible withdrawal are that the values that were invested in for 20 years and the progress the Afghan people have made have all been jeopardized,” said Shafiqullah Shafiq, a university lecturer.

A number of Afghans also criticized the United States for leaving Afghanistan in such an uncertain state.

“The United States came to Afghanistan but did not provide aid and support--if it did, the poor people did not benefit from it,” said Gul Ahmad, a Helmand resident.

“What will be the fate of women, youth, and school children? The people do not know what is going to happen,” said Nazzi, a Kabul resident.

After 20 years of engagement, Afghanistan still remains on the list of the poorest and most corrupt countries in the world.
