Winter Threatens One Million Afghans: Govt

Over a million impoverished Afghans are at serious risk of starvation and in need of other humanitarian assistance during the winter, the State Ministry on Natural Disaster said on Saturday.

“We don’t have a tent, a heater or sufficient food,” said Ahmad Zia, a resident in Kabul.

“There is no woodfire and no water,” said Gul Agha, a resident in Kabul.

Natural disasters claim lives in the country every year, but fighting--one of the the biggest challenges in the country--has displaced tens of thousands of families.

“3.5 billion Afs have been designated to implement a winter disaster management program, 2.5 billion Afs from that amount have been prepared,” said Tamim Azimi, a spokesman for the State Ministry on Disaster Management.

Afghan officials have said that continued violence could displace another 25,000 families in the country.

Among other issues, poverty and unemployment threaten the lives of thousands of Afghans.

Several months ago, President Ashraf Ghani said that over 90 percent of Afghans live below the poverty line.
