Taliban’s Cabinet Choices Spark Reactions

On Thursday a number of Afghan politicians and foreign countries reacted to the Taliban government's announcement of its caretaker government.

Mohammadi Karim Khalili, the leader of the Hizb-e-Wahdat Islami Afghanistan party, on Thursday in a Facebook post called the Taliban cabinet exclusive and called on the Taliban to reconsider it.

“The Taliban’s declared government is neither politically inclusive nor socially inclusive. If it is not reviewed and reorganized, it will not only [fail to] guarantee the country’s interests and strengthen unity and durable stability, it will continue and worsen the crisis in the country,” his Facebook post reads.

Mohammad Sarwar Danish, the former second vice president, in a Facbeook post said the cabinet is exclusively under the control of a specific group of people.

The Taliban made a statement about the choices of government officials:

“The Islamic Emirate considered it necessary to immediately form a cabinet using the cadres of the Islamic Emirate,” said Anaamullah Samangani, a member of the Taliban’s cultural commission.

Meanwhile, Pakistan and China have said the formation of the new government was a necessity adding that they hope the Taliban establish relations with the world’s countries.

“Since there was no government structure for the past three or four weeks, I think there was a requirement of government structure and the Taliban have announced an interim political setup,” said Pakistan ambassador to Kabul Mansoor Ahmad Khan on Thursday.

“We welcome Taliban’s positive attitude towards political structure, counterterrorism and having relations with neighboring countries. But it is important these should be put into practice. We hope that the Taliban have learned from the past and get engaged with all parties and implement the commitments they have made to the world,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.

Germany's Foreign Minister Heiko Mass, however, said he does not think the Taliban will be recognized at the moment.

“Without considering the issue of recognition, still it is necessary to talk to the Taliban. Taliban might not be recognized, because I do not think this can be done in the current situation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Qatar foreign minister is in a visit in Iran and reportedly he is going to talk with the Iranian officials over Afghanistan.

Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also on Thursday in a phone call to his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon discussed regional developments, including the situation in Afghanistan.
