Flash Floods Cause Casualties, Damage in Several Provinces

The Ministry of State for Disaster Management said that flash floods hit several provinces of Afghanistan, causing casualties and financial damage.

“Based on the reports, due to heavy rainfalls in Khost, Paktia and Nangarhar, unfortunately four people were killed and three others were injured. Also 60 houses have been partially or completely destroyed and 350 livestock killed,” said Shafiullah Rahimi, a spokesman for the ministry.

Nangarhar province was hit by the most flash floods, according to officials.

The residents said that they lost most of their property in the floods.

“The rain began at 1:00, we were beginning for God. We even didn’t taker about our wheat harvests,” said Hassibullh, a resident of Nangarhar.

“The floods were so heavy that they damaged all of the wheat. We call on the government for help because these farmers don’t have anything else. All of their property was this harvest,” said Fazal, a resident of Nangarhar.

This comes as the Ministry of Energy and Water warned of heavy rains and flash floods in several parts of the country.

“The heavy rainfall and storm along with floods are anticipated in the north, Helmand and Kabul zones,” said Rohullah Bigi, an official of the Ministry.

However, the Ministry of Agriculture expressed optimism that the damages caused by these floods have been less compared to the previous year.

“The current casualties are way less than the previous year,” said Musbah Mustaeen, a spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture Irrigation and Livestock.

According to the State Ministry for Disaster Management, at least 17 people have died in floods and 60 others have been injured since mid-April.

Nangarhar's press department said in an earlier statement that 25 were injured by floods in Kami, Lalpor, Goshta, Koozkunar and other districts of the province.
