Biden, Modi Call for Inclusive Govt in Afghanistan

US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a joint statement stressed the need for the formation of an inclusive “political structure” in Afghanistan.

The statement said Biden and Modi expressed a commitment to continue close consultations on the situation in Afghanistan. “The leaders emphasized the importance of formation of an inclusive political structure and called on the Taliban to respect the human rights of all Afghans, including women and girls, and to respect freedom of movement,” the statement reads.

However, the Islamic Emirate’s spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid, in reaction to the statement, said that the Afghan soil is not a threat to regional and world countries and that formation of an inclusive government is an internal issue of Afghanistan.

“We have made this commitment to the world that there will be no threat from Afghan soil to anyone, and there is no threat here and the countries should not be worried about it. The issue of an inclusive government is an internal issue and we want countries to not interfere with it,” Mujahid said.

The political analysts gave various opinions on the matter:

“The formation of the inclusive government is an Afghan issue. Any format which is provided by the foreigners, it is not acceptable for the Afghans,” said Hatif Mukhtar, political analyst.

“The demand of the US and India is not new. But this is also the demand of all Afghans. and the interim government should consider this demand,” said Asadullah Nadim, political analyst.

Biden and Modi also reiterated their strong support for a peaceful, secure, and stable Afghanistan.

They discussed the current humanitarian situation and concurred on the need to continue to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan, the statement said, adding that the “leaders urged the Taliban to abide by UNSC Resolution 2593, which demands that Afghan territory should never be used to threaten or attack any country, shelter or train terrorists, or plan or finance terrorist attacks.”
