American actress, filmmaker and humanitarian Angelina Jolie wrote an open letter to Matiullah Wesa, a social activist who is currently detained in Afghanistan, saying: "Like you too, I hope for a day in which every Afghan child is able to go to school, college or university and contribute freely to a peaceful Afghanistan" and "please know that you are not forgotten."

Angelina Jolie said in the letter: “I know that you have dedicated over a decade of your life to helping Afghan children, particularly in rural areas, to have access to books and the means and the opportunity to go to school. I am aware that you continue the legacy of your late father who carried out similar work on behalf of Afghan children.”

“I add my voice, with humility, to those of everyone calling for your release, so that you can continue your important work, and for the lifting of all restrictions on education for girls,” the letter reads.

Jolie wrote in the letter: "We have not yet had a chance to meet, but I hope we will soon. I dream of returning to Kabul and sitting with you and your family, friends and colleagues dedicated to helping Afghan children to achieve their potential."

Angelina Jolie further stated that teachers, journalists and human rights defenders have no place in Afghanistan's prisons.

“Teachers, journalists and human rights defenders have no place in Afghanistan's prisons. You belong in your communities, where you do so much good for Afghan people. I thank you for everything that you have done - and will go on to do, I hope - to support equal access to education for every single Afghan child,” Jolie noted.
